Owning or designing a website is undoubtedly a giant step towards online marketing. Having a website is the best platform to create awareness and to reach out to billions of people throughout the world and letting them know about your products or services. Having a website enables you to attract more attention from your potential clients or customers. The major obstacle faced by Internet Marketers, when it comes to owning a website, is creating the website and then managing it themselves. Some new marketers have even given up their dreams altogether because they could not afford to pay a website designer for their services. Twenty years ago, it was almost a requirement to hire a website designer. But not anymore!

Here is the good news. You can create a website all by yourself and also manage it, all by yourself! However, a question about which platform to use always arises when it comes to creating your own website. People often ask me, “Should I just get a WordPress site or Joomla, Drupal – or what?”

WordPress, Drupal and Joomla are very good content management systems (CMS – geek speak for “website”). These platforms will allow you to make changes to your website without writing out one line of code! All of these companies offer great features with absolutely great customizations and drag and drop templates and strong site security.

Nevertheless, I will be recommending you go with WordPress to use as your CMS because it is definitely the most popular is often the best choice for people new to Internet Marketing. More so, it works especially great for blogs, small to medium size websites and some smaller e-commerce sites as well. Therefore, I will discussing the steps involved with installing a WordPress website.

1. Auto Install of the WordPress Bundle:

I like it simple. Some hosting servers will have an auto install feature set up for WordPress. Simply click on the “Install WordPress” button; fill in the few details that pop up (assigning an Administrator and setting the password) and BINGO! It is finished in just a few seconds.

Now, just go and begin to set up your website!

I like easy! How about you? But there are some out there that like doing it the “old-fashioned way” – so this is for you!

2. Download The WordPress Installation Bundle

To begin the installation procedure, first you have to download WordPress through its official download page (WordPress.org) I suggest you download and install the most recent version of WordPress.

When you click the Download button for the most recent version of WordPress, the installation bundle will be saved to your computer. Find the installation file you just downloaded and extract the files inside to another folder (preferably a new folder).

3. Transfer the WordPress Files to Your Server

You now have to upload the extracted documents and folders to your web server. The simplest way of uploading the installation package is to go through a FTP company. (File Transfer Protocol – you can Google this online to understand the steps and procedures involved in doing so. There are many FTP options available and each has its own unique characteristics. It would be beyond the scope of this article to go into all that are available).

When downloading is finished, extract the file and upload it to your website’s hosting account. You can do that through FTP also by using the same company you choose for the download. For example, if you choose “Filezilla” you would go >>> c-Panel >>> File Manager >>> Upload File(s). If you want to make this WordPress information to be your primary site, place the files in the “public_html” folder of your hosting account. Meanwhile, you can also make a sub-folder (that is: public_html/blog) in case you wish to run just part of your website on WordPress.

4. Make a MySQL Database for Your WordPress to Use.

You will now have to create y MySQL Database and assign a user to it with full access (Administrator rights). When you finish creating the MySQL Database and assigning a User, ensure you “write out” the database name, username and the password you just created. All of those items will be needed during the installation process.

5. Begin the Installation Procedure

You can now navigate to your website and proceed with the installation process. If you already uploaded WordPress in the public_html directory, you will launch your website by typing your domain name in the browser of your choice. The main thing you will discover is a message letting you know that you do not have a wp-config.php file. If this is the case, you should create it now. Simply click on “Create a Configuration File” to continue.

You will then see a message, requesting you to set up the necessary installation. Ignore it and just click GO (since you have already completed this previously with these instructions).

Now enter the full details of the MySQL Database you have created then click the Submit Button.

On the next page, enter your Administrative name as well as the Title of your website. After filling in your Administrator details, click “Install WordPress” and – that’s it!

Now you have successfully (hopefully) installed your WordPress website and you can now login to have complete access to your administrative backend. Now go and begin to create that awesome website and begin to post articles, etc. to help your clients out.

Remember at the beginning when I said “I like easy?” Now you can see why! If you select a hosting company that has “One Click Install” of WordPress – use it! While everyone else is fumbling around about step 3 or so – you will already be creating your content on your website! It is THAT easy!
