It was a bit disappointing that the iWatch was not announced at WWDC 2013, but maybe some clues to the iWatch can be found from the iOS 7 and Mac OS X Mavericks announcements during the Keynote address at WWDC 2013.
One of the main messages you can get from this keynote is that Apple is continuing to create an ecosystem whereby all devices work together in harmony to make your life easier. Now, information from your Mac syncs with your iPhone and iPad closer than before and vice versa. Adding another gadget to the mix, this time a wearable gadget, could help complement the entire ecosystem.
Let’s start by exploring the new features of Mac OS X Mavericks and iOS 7 and how they could fit in with the iWatch.
Mac OS X Mavericks
Some of the most significant changes to Mac OS X are the under-the-hood changes made to make the system more power efficient and utilize computing resources more effectively. Of those mentioned, Timer Coalescing was shown as a means to group low-level operations so as to increase the amount of idle CPU time, thus allowing the processor to enter a low-power, energy saving state for a longer period and more often. No doubt, this technology will trickle down to the iOS devices (if it has not already) and also to the iWatch. Given that the iWatch would likely have the smallest battery of all these devices, Timer Coalescing could help consumers squeeze out as much battery life from the iWatch as possible. After all, Apple is determined to stay as number 1 for consumer satisfaction and battery life is one of the key consumer concerns.
Next, the Maps app has landed on OS X Mavericks and has a cool new feature. You can send directions information from your Mac to your iPhone for navigating on the go. Imagine if you can send the data to your iWatch as well, or use the iWatch as a second display and a directional tool while navigating.
Dictation on the Mac has also seen some updates. You can now use dictation offline and get real-time updates on your dictation as well. Given the small size of a smartwatch, typing on such a small surface area does not provide a good user experience. Apple could use Siri’s dictation prowess to allow users to send short replies, tweets or Facebook updates using Siri, hence bypassing the need for a smartwatch keyboard.
Lastly, notifications on OS X has improved and can now sync between devices. If you have read your notification on your Mac, it would disappear from your iPhone or iPad and vice versa. It would not be difficult to extend this functionality to your iWatch as well, so if you have viewed your notification on the iWatch, your other Apple devices will not bug you with the same notifications.
