We all know the popular types of operating systems such as Linux, Windows XP, Windows Vista and the very recent Windows 7. Each operating system differs from one another and newer systems are made to overcome the drawbacks of the existing operating systems. But every operating system works on some fundamentals which form the base of the operating system. An operating system has to fulfill some basic tasks to operate as an ideal operating system.

The main function of an operating system (OS) is to provide an interface to the user to communicate with the computer which only understands machine coded language. Machine languages are complicated and are very time consuming to learn. Not everyone can become a master of machine language. Hence, to provide every user from the basic to advanced, OS’s are used depending on the level of the user. For a basic user operating systems provide the convenience to run a machine at per their will without knowing the coded language that the computer understands. The system also acts an interface between the input output devices of the computer. Following are some of the basic features of an OS –

1. An OS must execute programs first loading it in the memory and then running it. This program should reach a finishing point after executing successfully or abruptly due to an error.

2. An OS performs the required input output operations requested by the user. It should look after the provision of resources to complete the requested input output operation.

3. It should be able to let the user to create files, move files or copy files. In short it should allow the user to alter a file as per their requirement.

4. Communication is an important function in the completion of processes in the computer. The OS has to make sure that processes have enough resources to communicate with each other or with processes of another computer. Sufficient arrangements should be made by the OS to ensure that information is shared between different processes as and when required.

5. Detecting errors is also one of the jobs that an OS has to carry out. It has to check error that may occur in any part of the system such as input output devices, in the hard disk or any external device connected to the system. In addition to checking the error it should be equipped to deal with the error and rectify it.

6. If multiple users share a computer system then the OS should allow different users to store their data in different parts of the system without revealing it to the other users of the system. Password protection is one such function which should be provided by an OS.
