Apparently talcum powder can be used to stop the squeaking but it is unlikely that this will be a permanent fix. Fixing squeaking floorboards will mean that you have to lift the carpet in order to access the wooden floor beneath, it does not matter if your floorboards are made from solid wood or chipboard as this method will work on either type of floor.
