While it has been possible to take pictures of documents from a mobile phone camera for quite some time, it is only in the last year or so that new smartphones and software have made them legitimate document scanning tools.
The iPhone, and iPhone 4 in particular are examples of a smartphone that has a decent camera and good scanning software that will let you scan on the go.
Choose An App
To get started with mobile scanning you of course need a phone, but just as importantly you need a good piece of software. Yes, I’m talking about an app.
Visit the iTunes App Store and take a look at the different options for document scanning apps. Some features you want are:
- The ability to adjust brightness and contrast
- Color and black and white scanning
- Cropping ability
- Export features
- Ideally, multi-page scanning
With just your iPhone and the Notes app, you can scan documents like a pro without the hassle of a scanner.

Have Decent Lighting
You don’t need to have bright lighting to have a decent scan, but the more lighting you have, the better the results. Try not to have shadows over the page if you can help it.
Take A Picture Of The Page
Once you have your software installed and you have your page in a good location, it is time to scan.
Fire up your scanning app and tap the icon to take a picture. In most software it looks like a camera. (You do have an option to use a picture that is already in your camera roll).
Get as close as you can while still capturing the text on the page. Note that you don’t need to be right over top of the page (in fact, you will probably have shadows if you do). Instead, have it at a bit of an angle. Hit the camera button, and then you will usually have an opportunity to review the picture and either re-take or accept.

Define The Page Boundaries
If your scanning app has crop functionality (and it should), it is now time to define the boundaries of your page. In almost all apps, this is done by having a square go around the page. It tries to guess where the text is, though often the guess is not perfect. Use your fingers to drag the four corners of the square around the text, and then hit Process or whatever the equivalent button is in your app.
Do Document Enhancements
At this stage, you will be given the opportunity to review your newly-cropped document. If it looks great, you are probably ready to save it. However, your app will likely give you additional opportunities to enhance the image. You can make it black & white or color and adjust the brightness and contrast to make it more clear.
Add Multiple Pages
If you have only a one page document, you are set. However, if you have multiple pages, at this point you can hit the plus button in most apps and it will allow you to take another picture and append it as another page to your document. Keep going until you have captured all your pages.
