Viewing the Linux /bin and System Directories Below the / (Root) Directory
Now see some of the System directories “off of” the / (root) directory of the Linux file system that you need to know about.
Examples of Using the Linux ls Command to View Some Common Linux System Directories
Changing into the Linux Root Directory And Seeing Some of Its Directories
Use the commands below to: clear the screen, then change into the root directory, and then use the ls command – with the l for “long” and -d for “directories only” options – to see all directories beginning with “b” (only) – due to the file pattern of “b*”.
$ clear ; cd / ; ls -ld b*
Notice the bin directory below the / (root) directory.
Viewing the Linux Binary Program Files in the /bin Directory
Now change into the bin directory (that is “off of” the / directory) and look at its contents.
$ cd /bin ; ls -l | less
Scroll down (and up if you want to) and with the up and down arrows and page up and page down keys.
The bin directory, in the path of /bin (slash bin) contains “essential” binary (program) files that provide you with many basic Linux command line (non-menu) utilities. These utilities are commands that are run and do not provide a text-based GUI menu or an X GUI menu.
For example, the bin directory includes commonly used commands, such as cp (copy files), ls (list files) and mkdir (make directory).
While still in the “interface of the less command” press /cp and press Enter to “search for and find” files beginning with the letters cp, such as the binary file for the cp command.
Repeat this to see the program files for ls and mkdir commands.
Press q to quit to quit out of the less command interface.
The /usr/bin directory also contains “essential” command-line utilities.
Now change directory back to the / (root) directory and use the pwd (path to working directory) command to display the current directory.
$ cd / ; pwd
The Linux system directory, the bin directory and the command concepts covered here apply to ALL Linux distributions, including Red Hat, Ubuntu, openSUSE, Debian, SUSE, Fedora and Slackware Linux.
