Summary:  The Configuration Manager is responsible for maintaining the accuracy, completeness, and usefulness of the Configuration Management Database (CMDB). This role acts as a data steward, ensuring CMDB integrity supports ITIL processes like Incident, Change, and Asset Management.

Technical ServiceNow Expertise Required:

CMDB & CSDM Management: Proven experience in managing a ServiceNow CMDB, specifically implementing the Common Service Data Model (CSDM) framework.
Discovery & Service Mapping: Strong, hands-on experience with ServiceNow Discovery, Service Mapping (pattern development), and Service Graph connectors.
Data Integration: Proficiency in managing integration via Integration Hub, ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes, and MID Servers.
Identification & Reconciliation: Expertise in setting up Identification and Reconciliation Rules (IRE) to resolve duplicate Configuration Items (CIs).
Scripting & Troubleshooting: Familiarity with JavaScript for pattern development and troubleshooting probes/sensors.
ITIL v4 Framework: Solid understanding of ITIL v4 practices, specifically SACM (Service Asset and Configuration Management).
CI Lifecycle Management: Knowledge of managing the entire lifecycle of CIs from onboarding/creation to retirement.
Data Governance: Experience defining and enforcing policies, procedures, and standards for CMDB data.
 

Key responsibilities include:

Own Configuration Item (CI) lifecycle management from creation through retirement, including scope definition, classification, and status accuracy.
Maintain accurate CI relationships and dependency mappings across infrastructure, applications, and services.
Partner with data providers and integrated systems to ensure timely, accurate CMDB updates.
Train and support stakeholders on CMDB data standards, entry, and maintenance.
Support Change, Incident, Problem, and Risk Management with reliable CI data and impact analysis.
Execute CMDB governance and audits to ensure data quality, compliance, and continuous improvement.
 

Qualifications & Certifications

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or equivalent work experience.
5-7 years of experience  in configuration management, with 2–5+ years specifically in ServiceNow.
ServiceNow Certified Implementation Specialist (CIS) – CMDB
ServiceNow Certified Implementation Specialist (CIS) – Discovery
ITIL Foundation certification (v4 or v5).
ServiceNow Certified System Administrator (CSA) credential.
 

Soft Skills & Leadership

Stakeholder Collaboration: Ability to work across teams (IT, security, business units) to ensure CI ownership and proper mapping.
Analytical Thinking: Strong problem-solving abilities, particularly regarding data quality and dependency mapping.
Communication: Effective at mentoring the organization on configuration management procedures.
